About Parallels Workstation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Parallels Workstation is the most powerful, easiest-to-use, cost-effective
desktop virtualization solution available today. It empowers any user, from
experienced professional developers to sales executives and casual home users,
with the ability to create completely networked, totally secure independent
Virtual Machines on a single physical machine.

Parallels Workstation sophisticated virtualization engine enables each Virtual 
Machine to operate identically to a stand-alone computer. Each Virtual Machine
works as with its own processor, RAM, floppy and CD drives, I/O devices, and
hard disk - everything a physical computer contains.

Parallels Workstation 2.1 is powered by a lightweight hypervisor, a thin layer
of software that is between part of the host computer's hardware and the primary
operating system. The Lightweight Hypervisor controls some of the host 
computer's hardware resources, resulting in dramatically more stable, more
secure, and higher-performing Virtual Machines. 

Intel hardware virtualization technology (VT-x) is supported by Parallels
Workstation. Intel Virtualization Technology is specially designed for improving
performance and stability on platforms running multiple operating systems. If
VT-enabled CPU is detected by Parallels Workstation, the support is
automatically turned on.


2. Host PC Requirements
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To run Parallels Workstation for Linux, your computer should meet the
following hardware requirements:

2.1    Processor
400 MHz or faster processor which supports the Intel Pentium II instruction set.
1,5 GHz or faster recommended.

2.2    Platform
32-bit or 64-but platform. Note that to run Parallels Workstation 2.1 on a
64-bit platform you should have a 32-bit primary OS installed on it.

2.3    Memory
Memory to run the primary operating system plus memory required for each
guest operating system and its applications. Please see your primary and guest
operating system documentation for their memory requirements. (1 Gbyte or more
is recommended).

2.4    Hard Disk
Hard disk with 20 MB of free disk space required for product installation.
Disk space required for Virtual Machines should be estimated according to volume
of data you suppose to store on virtual hard disks.  

2.5    Display adapter
Any SVGA video card with an 8-bit display adapter supported by the primary
system. 16-bit color depth or higher is recommended.

2.6    Network adapter
If you intend to access Internet in Virtual Machine, you should have an Ethernet
adapter installed on your computer that is supported by your Linux primary
operating system. The adapter should provide the promiscuous mode. At present,
almost every 10/100/1000 Ethernet card can support the promiscuous mode.

3.1    Software packages
The following software packages should be installed:
- Sources of currently installed kernel (if you don't install kernel manually,
  then you should install kernel-sources package from your distribution);
- glibc [glibc]
- gcc [gcc], ld [libtool] (included in any development package)
- X Window System including
    xf86vidmode extension (for fullscreen only)
    XKB extension (for keyboard national layouts and leds support)
- Qt 3.0.5 library multithreaded [qt3]

5. Virtual Machine Equipment

Parallels Workstation virtualizes the following PC hardware:
- CPU: Intel Pentium II or AMD Duron
- Generic motherboard compatible with Intel i815 chipset
- RAM up to 1500 MB
- VGA and SVGA with VESA 3.0 support
- 1.44 MB floppy drive (mapped to physical drive or to image file)
- Up to 4 IDE devices that may be either virtual hard drives (from 20 MB up to
  128 GB each, mapped to image file) or CD/DVD-ROM drives (mapped to physical 
  drive or to image file)
- Ethernet virtual network card compatible with RTL8029
- Up to 4 serial (COM) ports (mapped to real port, to socket or to  output file)
- Up to 3 bi-directional parallel (LPT) ports (mapped to real port, to printer
  or to output file)
- 2-port USB 1.1 controller
- AC97 compatible sound card
- 104-key Windows enhanced keyboard
- PS/2 wheel mouse


6. Installation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6.1    Installing Parallels Workstation for Linux.
Note: To install Parallels Workstation 2.1 on a Linux computer, you need root
1. Launch the Terminal program.
2. Run the
     su
   command to gain root privileges. Enter the password to the root account when
   you are asked for it.
3. If .rpm is supported in your system, locate the .rpm package file
      parallels-2.1.xxxx-lin.i386.rpm
   To start installing Parallels Workstation, issue the following command:
     rpm -i parallels-2.1.xxxx-lin.i386.rpm
   Proceed to step 6.        
4. If .deb is supported in you system, locate the .deb package file
      parallels-2.1.xxxx-lin.deb
   To start installing Parallels Workstation, issue the following command:
     dpkg -i parallels-2.1.xxxx-lin.deb
   Proceed to step 6.    
5. If both .rpm and .deb are not supported in your system, locate the .tgz
   package file
      parallels-2.1.xxxx-lin.tgz
   and extract it into any existing directory:
     tar -xzpf parallels-2.1.xxxx-lin.tgz -C <directory name>
   Then go to the directory where you unpacked by the previous command and
   issue the next command
     cd parallels-2.1.xxxx-lin
   Run the following command
     ./install.sh              
6. After the installation completes, you should run the post-installation
   script. Issue the following command
     parallels-config
7. When prompted, press Enter on the keyboard.
8. Read the License Agreement up to the end by pressing Spacebar on the keyboard.
   To accept the Agreement, type "y" or "yes" (do not care about upper or 
   lowercase) and press Enter.
9. The Parallels Workstation configuration procedure configures, compiles and
   installs drivers. After the process is finished you are informed about the
   successful completion.
10.In the Terminal, issue the 
     exit
   command to leave the root account. You can now run Parallels Workstation!

6.2    Uninstalling Parallels Workstation for Linux
Note: To uninstall Parallels Workstation on a computer running Linux you need
root privileges.
1. If RPM is supported in your system, run the command
     su -c "rpm -e parallels"
   Enter the root password. 
2. If DEB is supported in your system, run the command
     su -c "dpkg -r parallels"
   Enter the root password. 
3. If both RPM and DEB are not supported in your system:
   -In the Terminal, run the command
      su
    to gain root privileges. Enter the password to the root account when you are
    asked for it.
   -Go to installation directory and run the
      ./uninstall.sh
    script.
   -Leave the root account by running the following command:
      exit
Uninstallation of the Parallels Workstation does not delete any files that
have been created using Parallels Workstation, such as configuration files,
virtual hard disks and so on.
