If you start a guest operating system with the floppy drive enabled, you may connect/disconnect it and change it options while running the guest OS. Parallels Workstation allows to:
Note: If the guest OS is started with the floppy drive disabled, you should shut down the OS first, then enable floppy in the Configuration Editor (select the Enabled checkbox in the Floppy Options tab) and restart the guest OS.
Guest operating system with a virtual floppy connected to a real floppy drive prevents the floppy from being accessed by the primary OS while guest OS is running. To disconnect the floppy drive from the primary OS without shutting the guest OS down click Floppy --> Disconnect in the Parallels Workstation Devices menu.
The floppy drive can be reconnected again by clicking Floppy --> Connect in the Devices menu.
The type of media accessed by the virtual floppy drive can be switched from a real floppy drive to image file and vice versa. Use Floppy --> Connect to and Floppy --> Connect image commands of the Parallels Workstation Devices menu.
Note: There is another way to perform all the actions described above. Right-click the floppy drive icon 
on the status bar to display floppy drive context menu and select the required command.
