General information.
====================

The utility MTS, whose name is inspired to `TS' (`Text Search', the celebrated
piece of software from Norton Utilities), looks for files which contain one or
more given strings. MTS has the ability of searching several strings (up to a
maximum number of 250), selecting files which contain at least one occurrence
of each given string and providing fast and accurate tally of detected
occurrences. You may either browse selected files by means of a file viewer
built in the program or process them globally (e.g., you may collect a set of
selected files into a packed archive).

Some options are available to provide control over file searching (lower and
upper boundaries of file size, maximum subdirectory level, exclusion or
inclusion of binary and hidden files, forcing exclusion or inclusion of files
with certain extensions). Both interactive and command-line driven processes
are available. Use the `mts /?' command to view the list of available
command-line options.

Expand the self-extracting RAR archive MTS101E.EXE and read the user's guide
MTS.TXT for more information.

The original distribution of the English version of MTS includes the following
files:

MTS.EXE      the executable program;
MTS.TXT      the user's guide;
MTS.TBL      example of Windows->DOS character conversion table (optional);
MTS_ARC.BAT and MTS_SORT.BAT batch programs to manage selected files.

License for use and distribution.
=================================

Permission is granted to any individual or institution to use, copy, or
redistribute the program MTS, as long as the following conditions are fully
accepted and observed:

 - the package must be distributed in its original unmodified form, by means
of the self-extracting archive MTS*E.EXE (where * identifies the version number
and the letter E stands for English);
 - noone is allowed to modify the files MTS.EXE and MTS.TXT, contained in the
original archive; in particular, the copyright notice must be retained;
 - no person or company may charge a fee or receive a profit in redistributing
the program MTS (no matter what the distribution media).

The above norms apply also when the software is bundled with another software
package or when it is supplied with a product of any kind: one or more files
may be provided in uncompressed form, but the original packed RAR archive must
be ALWAYS supplied in the distribution. Any person or company, interested in
bundling the software MTS in their products, should simply send an
acknowledgement to the author, either via letter or via E-mail.

*** DISCLAIMER ***
==================

The software MTS is distributed "as is". No warranty of any kind is expressed
or implied. You use at your own risk. The author and his Department will not
be liable for data loss, damages, loss of profits or any other kind of loss
while using or misusing this software.

Software autenticity.
=====================

Please, check the autenticity of the self-extracting packed archive!

The original packed archive is available on Internet and may be freely
downloaded by connecting to one of the following addresses:
http://www.giulianoartico.it/soft/mts.shtm
ftp://ftp.math.unipd.it/pub/people/artico/

1) The distribution archive is packed with RAR and is equipped with the
following autenticity validation string:

Giuliano Artico, Dip. di Matematica P.A. - Padova

If this string is not displayed during unpacking, then the archive has been
certainly modified and the executable MTS.EXE contained in it should *NOT* be
run.

2) A detached PGP signature for the MTS101E.EXE archive is appended to this
README.TXT file. The public PGP key of Giuliano Artico is available on the MIT
PGP Key Server at http://pgp.mit.edu and on the author's home page (ZIP archive
http://www.giulianoartico.it/soft/artico.zip). The self-extracting RAR archive
ARTI-PGP.EXE available at  http://www.giulianoartico.it/soft/arti-pgp.exe
contains the complete collection of detached signatures for the author's
software.

Assuming you have installed PGP and added the public key of Giuliano Artico,
you can verify the file MTS101E.EXE by giving a command like

pgp readme.txt mts101e.exe
