             WinTorg shareware/demonstration version
             ***************************************

WWinTorg is a simulation that has been developed to help under-
graduate university and college students of organic chemistry
learn about using spectroscopy, other physical measurements and
chemical reactions to identify organic unknowns.

Unknowns can be identified by any mix of spectroscopy and
chemical tests etc. It is possible to use the program as a source
of spectroscopic unknowns and avoid chemical tests entirely or to
use just tests and derivatives (traditional approach) with no
spectroscopy or to use any mix of the two.

An extensive help system is available that includes spectroscopic
correlation information, six spectroscopic calculators, chemical
equations and tables of compounds and derivatives. Once an
unknown has been identified, assignments of its major
spectroscopic features can be viewed.

The amount of help that a student can obtain is controlled by the
instructor. For example, WinTorg with the help system enabled
could be used by students while they are learning about
spectroscopy and identifying unknowns. Then the help system could
be disabled and the program used for assessment.

**************---Copyright Notice and Disclaimer---**************

THE AUTHOR, DR ADRIAN BLACKMAN, RETAINS ALL COPYRIGHT
AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS TO WINTORG AND
      ASSOCIATED FILES AND PROGRAMS.

The program WinTorg and all associated programs, files and
documentation are supplied as is. NO WARRANTY OF ANY KIND IS
GIVEN to you or any other third party and neither the author nor
the University of Tasmania shall be liable for any damages or
losses whatsoever that may arise from use of this material.

The shareware/demonstration version of WinTorg is available at
no cost. A full refund of the purchase price of the registered
version may be obtained on request within 30 days of purchase.

************************---Installation---***********************

WinTorg runs under Windows 95 or later, or Windows NT. A display
using at least "high-color" (16 bit) or higher is recommended.

7.5M (or less) of hard drive space (3.9M system files system
files if not already present, 3.6M WinTorg files)
and a Windows-compatible mouse or other pointing device are
required.

To install the program and associated files, run setup.exe.

The main program is wintorgs.exe. Wtsetup.exe is also installed.

**********************---Getting started---**********************

The following folder (directory) will be created, if default
settings are accepted.
     C:\Program Files\wintorg\
This directory contains the WinTorg material.

An entry in the Start menu will also be made.
     Start --> Programs --> wintorg
(If default settings were used.)

To get WinTorg running either:
  * Click on the appropriate icon found via the Start menu.

  * Use Windows Explorer, navigate to the wintorg directory and
    double click on wintorgs.exe

Consult WinTorg help and this file (wtreadme.txt) for more
details. The text file may be found in the wintorg directory.

The program wtsetup.exe allows customisation of WinTorg. Over two
dozen options can be set. For example it is possible to choose:

  * whether a student can have multiple sessions (that is to
allow saving of information to file) or not

  * whether password protection is allowed for student files

  * if the spectra and/or chemical tests and/or derivatives are
available(visible) for students to use or not

  * how much assistance that a student can receive e.g. can
: see possible names of unknown to choose from
: see possible structures of unknown to choose from
: get help about results and unknown type

  * whether or not a picture about Tasmania is shown (as a
"reward" when an unknown is identified)

  * if sounds are allowed or not (if allowed then students are
given the option of switching this off or on)

  * show or not show a "Tip of the Day" to returning users

  * enable/disable each of the spectroscopic calculators

The options about allocation of unknowns are operational only in
the registered version.

**************************---Removal---**************************

To remove WinTorg and associated files, use the standard Windows
procedure obtained via
     Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs

The subdirectory wintorg\users and any files that it contains
will need to be removed manually (as will any files elsewhere
that have the extension .wtg).

***********************---Registration---************************

Payment is to be made to:-
School of Chemistry, Attention Dr AJ Blackman
   University of Tasmania
   Private Bag 75, Hobart
   Tasmania, Australia 7001

Payment can be made by international cheque or money order.

Payment is also possible by major credit card provided that
appropriate details are received (mail or fax) showing the credit
card name, its expiry date, amount to be debited, and the name
and signature of the card holder.

Provided an official institutional order is received (mail or
fax), payment may be delayed until the goods and an invoice
have been received.

For institutional users WinTorg and associated files are supplied
on CD and shipping (postage) costs are included in the price. The
heavily discounted student version is only available by electronic
delivery (e-mail attachment).

*****************---Benefits of registration---******************

* FULL VERSION - 100 unknowns are supplied, 20 are simple
(monofunctional) and 79 are somewhat harder (but still suitable
for introductory students). There is one worked example. The
unknowns fall into 16 classes of compound and there are
  typically 6 of each class.

The unknowns may be allocated automatically by the WinTorg
program - first from 0 to 10 simple compounds (number set by
wtsetup program) are given. They are chosen randomly provided
that they all have different functional groups. Next the
harder unknowns are given in random order until all have been
completed. Alternatively unknown allocation may be done on an
individual basis by the instructor using a supplied
  program (wtallocate).

* SHORT VERSION - 20 simple monofunctional unknowns are supplied.
  There is one worked example.

The unknowns may be allocated automatically by the WinTorg
program. The maximum number of unknowns that a student can do
(in range 1-20) is set by the instructor via the wtsetup
program. That number is then given using the following rule:
10 simple compounds are first allocated in random order such
that each has a different functional group. Next the
remaining 10 simple unknowns are assigned in random order.
Alternatively unknown allocation may be done on an individual
basis by the instructor using a supplied program (wtallocate).

* The program wtsetup is included (also in shareware version).

* A program (wtunkshow) is supplied that shows the names,
structures and spectral assignments of the unknowns in a
  variety of ways.

* Another supplied program (wtstats) reads the files that users
of WinTorg create when they save their information. These files
are named with a wtg extension. The files can be selected and
processed; this operation can be repeated in case the files are
in several locations (eg on multiple floppy disks). Simple
  statistics can then be viewed.

"Screenshots" of WinTorg and its support programs may be seen at
http://www.chem.utas.edu.au/staff/blackman/shareware/torganal.htm

The programs wtsetup, wtallocate, wtunkshow and wtstats are all
password protected in the registered package.

* Registration as either an institutional or a student user is
possible, the licence conditions are given immediately below.

*********************---WinTorg licences---**********************
